Diabetes is the most common metabolic disorder affecting populations in all geographical regions of the world. The prevalence of diabetes is influenced by genetic, ethnic and socioeconomic factors. The World Health that the prevalence of diabetes is increasing in epidemic proportions especially in developing countries. India has the highest number of people with Diabetes in the World.
The prevalence of Diabetes is increasing in India, due to rapid urbanization, changing lifestyle even in rural areas and due to high genetic predisposition.
There is a large gap between the need and the demands related to research, education and capacity available for Diabetes care in India as well as in South Asia. Major limitation is the lack of trained man power focusing on chronic disease care. At present, we also have models and examples of Capacity building programmes specially suited for this part of the world.
In order to fulfill the demands for Training, Research, Education including awareness raising, a foundation called India Diabetes Research Foundation has been formed and registered under Societies registration Act. |

| The Objectives of the Foundation are the following: |
- To establish, operate, promote, maintain, manage institutions and research pertaining to Diabetes.
- To carry out basic and applied research in Diabetes.
- To establish, provide, maintain and conduct or assist research laboratories and institutions for scientific research in Diabetes.
- To disseminate of the research findings by publication
- To promote, develop and improve scientific exchange of knowledge as well as technical co-operation between similar research institutions.
- To conduct conferences, refresher courses, lectures, seminars, demonstrations and exhibitions on diabetes health care.
- To associate and collaborate with international & national research institutions, to promote diabetes research.
- To provide, award, institute fellowship or scholarships, stipends, remuneration and/or other similar payments to students and research scholars to facilitate their undertaking scientific research in the areas of concerned interest to the Society.
